We have defined some of the key terms we are using to describe our products, so you know exactly what we mean when we say it.

CIRCULAR

This refers to a closed-loop system based on the principles of minimizing the use of resource inputs, the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. The Circular Economy is a term coined by The Ellen MacArthur Foundation to look beyond the current take-make-waste extractive industrial model. A circular economy aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits.

It’s three main principles are:
1. Design out waste and pollution
2. Keep products and materials in use
3. Regenerate natural systems

Designing for circularity requires end-of-life consideration from conception. As we grow we will be working to keep materials in circulation by turning used tubes into new products and ensuring all packaging is either recyclable or biodegradable.

ORGANIC

Organic certified in the US means that there is no use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals used in the growing process. It also means no use of genetic engineering or irradiation. 72% of our current product ingredients are USDA certified for the benefit of our customers, our producers, and the planet.

PARABENS

Parabens are a family of synthetic preservatives used to prolong shelf life in many products. They are believed to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Although products that use parabens only contain a small amount, like any ingredient applied to your skin, it will be absorbed and built up over time. Look out for butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben in your products – the most common parabens. Our products are always parabens-free and contain no other synthetic preservatives.

FAIR  TRADE

Our vegan labeled products contain no animal products, extracts or by-products and have never been tested on animals. Fair trade is a global movement which ensures fair prices are paid to producers and supports safe and sustainable working conditions. 28% of our ingredients are certified by Fair Trade USA, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States. They audit transactions between US companies offering Fair Trade Certified™ products and the international suppliers from whom they source.
Annual inspections are conducted on the farms to ensure that strict socioeconomic development criteria is being met using increased Fair Trade revenues. Investments in community development is a key use of the Fair Trade Premium, sparking wider economic, social and environmental change.

GREEN WASHING

Greenwashing is the practice of branding or marketing a product or business in a way that misleads the consumer about its social and environmental benefits. Companies often market supposedly environmentally-friendly initiatives, while not addressing critical environmental and labor issues. In the US, ‘natural’ is not yet a defined and regulated term in cosmetics.

This allows for mislabeling or exaggeration within marketing. We define natural ingredients as any naturally occurring substance that is either wholly unprocessed or processed manually, mechanically or with another naturally derived solvent. Scientific advancement allows for many safe and beneficial synthetic ingredients. “Natural” does not always equal “sustainable”. We believe whether natural or synthetic, our customers deserve truth and clarity about where ingredients come from.
